SECTION 1: PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

     - Authorised institution: University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University Hanoi.

2.  Objectives

               The Journalism bachelor (BA) degree course of Journalism provides the students with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to work in the field of journalism – communication such as the capability to carry out various tasks regarding media in the digital era as well as in the context of international integration and globalisation. Furthermore, the students are able to research and solve problems of media at universities or in other research institutions...;

               After the course, students will be qualified to work for newspaper, media agencies, political and social organisations. They also possess the ability to pursue higher education and accumulate experience to become leaders and experts in the field of journalism and communication.


 

3.  Admissions

 

SECTION II: STANDARDS OF THE PROGRAMME

1. Knowledge and professional competence

1.1. Knowledge

               Graduates of the course have in-depth theoretical knowledge in the field of the major, master skills and possess practical understanding to be able to ascomplish tasks; to gain knowledge of basic principles in nature and society in order to develop new comprehension and be able to continue their studies at a higher level. They also have basic understandings in management, administration, law and environmental protection related to the major as well as and specific knowledge and professional capabilities as follows:

1.1.1. General knowledge:

               - Understanding and applying the knowledge and methodology of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Ideology with life and world perspective based on dialectical materialism as well as political enlightenment and solid class stance.
               - Having basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing which are at least equivalent to level 3 according to the Vietnamese Framework for Foreign Language Competence.

 

1.1.2. Sectoral knowledge

               - Understanding and demonstrating the awareness of social sciences and humanities, especially political science, psychology, sociology, history and economics;
               - Understanding the role of the social sciences and humanities in social life, especially in the digital era, integration and globalisation .

1.1.3. Block of knowledge by major and group of major

            - Understanding and being able to apply the theories and principles of the art of communication, inter-personal communication as well as communication through mass media to communicate effectively with in written , verbal and other forms;

              - Understanding basic issues of Law and Media Ethics in practice;
              - Understanding and analysing the role and strength of mass media in society. Understanding different career fields and tasks in the media industry; 
              - Understanding the model of media agencies and the role and responsibilities of individuals within such organisations; 
              - Demonstrating the understanding of concepts and basic theory of mass media (the role of the media in social life, the basic functions of communication, the ethical principles of journalism... ) to become media practitioners and professional journalists.

1.1.4. Block of knowledge by specific major

            - Demonstrating awareness, understanding and ability to implement the rights and responsibilities of journalists in society. Understanding and being aware of social responsibility, law, ethics of journalists – social political activists;

               - Understanding the requirements for accuracy, fairness and honesty of the communication activities and applying them in practice
               - Being able to recognise and apply the difference between fact and opinion  
               - Understanding the roles and relationships between individuals in the process of media production ;
               - Demonstrating the ability to think critically , creatively and independently when evaluating and appraising news ; and the ability to organize and present information in the form of articles belonging to different types of media (print , radio , television , public relations ... )

- Mastering the basic knowledge about the elements and principles of designing print presentations , Web pages , or making radio and television programs .

               - Through internships and thesis , understanding organizational models and operations of the press or the media companies ; Having the ability to apply knowledge and skills on practice under the guidance of journalists , media professionals ; Being capable of adapting to the working environment with high amount of pressure in the press; Flexible application of basic communication skills with sources, colleagues , editors ; Having the ability to collaborate with group / program production crew / ​​press colleagues.

1.2. Individual autonomy capability and responsibility

               - Being of capable of professional guidance and training ; producing idea in the process of performing the assigned tasks; being self-oriented , adapting to different working environments ; self- learning, accumulating knowledge and experience to improve professional qualifications ; making conclusion on the subject matter , common issues and  professional complexity ; planning, coordinating and promoting collective intelligence ; evaluating and improving average professional activities.

2. Skills

2.1. Professional skills

2.1.1.  Journalism skills

Having the ability to complete complex jobs requiring the use of theoretical and practical knowledge in different situations ; analyse , combine and evaluate  data and information , integrate the collective opinion and use new achievements in science and technology to solve practical or abstract problems in the trained field;  professionally guide in order to handle the local and regional issues;

 

      - Having the basic skills to use technical means and new technologies in mass media activity , demonstrating the ability to adapt to the professional multimedia and digital operating environment ;

            - Having the skill to effectively use camcorders , cameras , recorders ... and information processing software in the basic level.
            - Being capable of collecting , evaluating and analysing information by any means such as interviews , observations , collecting original documents or literature in a proficient manner . Having basic skills to independently investigate and seek information , organize independent interviews to collect , analyze , organize , combine information ( text, images , data ) to serve a certain topic .
            - Having proficient skills in handling and organizing information in the form of different media genres , serving publishing writings , broadcasting on the mass media (printed newspaper , radio , television, electronic newspaper ) . 

- Having the proficient skills to edit your own product and others in each type of newspaper and other media forms.

- Having basic skill in designing media publications, or creating television programs;

- Having the ability to work flexibly in different types and categories of newspaper;

- Understanding firsthand how to evaluate the result of the work through the use of quantitative and qualitative methods;

2.1.2  Ability to think logically and solve problems

- Having the ability to identify, recognise, judging, expressing opinions on the occurring issues and proposing, implementing the solutions to the problems.

- Knowing how to connect different resources from different professions to solve problems effectively.

2.1.3.  Ability to research and discover knowledge

- Searching, collecting documents, analysing context proficiently.

- Knowing how to conduct quantitative and qualitative research.

- Knowing how to apply research finding in practice

2.1.4.  Ability to think systematically

 - Systematizing basic theories related to specialization, holistic thinking/ logic, multidimensional thinking and analysis.

               - Combining interdisciplinary knowledge to detect problems, the relationship between problems and find the development trends of the research field

 - Detecting prioritized problem and finding solutions.

2.1.5. Ability to apply knowledge in practice

- Having the ability to flexibly and appropriately apply various knowledge and skills gained from study and internship, ability to master the knowledge and skills in the use of technical means of journalist.

- Having the ability to summarize the lessons of career for oneself drawn from practice on the basis of comparing with the learned knowledge.

2.1.6.  Ability to be creative, develop and lead the changes in career

- Having the ability to research and propose recommendations to improve the quality of media activity.

- Updating and predicting the development trend of the profession and having the ability to master the technical equipment in the digital era.

- Having the ability to prepare to continue self-training or participating in advanced courses after university or training courses in professions closed to the medoa.

2.1.7.  Social context and surroundings

- Assessing the social context and surrounding related to the profession, being able to identify the role of bachelor of Journalism.

- Making plan and finding appropriate solutions suitable to the changes and demands of the job, taking advantage of the personal knowledge and skill to develop;

- Taking advantage of the improvement in the development of profession in the world.

2.1.8.  Organisational context

- Awared of the context of the organisation and adapting to the job requirements of different organisation models (newspaper publisher, media company, media department of the government, NGO, business, school…);

- Connecting through internal communication of the organisation, taking part in forming organisational culture, working successfully in the organisation.

2.2.  Supporting skills

2.2.1.  Ability to self-control

- Adapting quickly to the changes in living and working environment. Having to ability to integrate and learn or a life time.

- Scheduling job scientifically and appropriately. Having the ability to work under pressure of time and job deadline.

-  Being able to assess the traits of colleagues to learn from.

2.2.2.  Group work ability

- Being active and positive in working with the group to produce media products.

- Being able to understand the process and steps in creating media products in order to cooperate with deparments that specialize in different works.

2.2.3.  Communication skill

- Being able to arrange communicating idea and content.

- Being able to communicate through documents, enail/ media instruments.

- Having the ability to professionally communicate with individuals and organisations to serve the media operation.

2.2.4. Ability to communicate in foreign languages

               - Having specialized foreign language skills to understand the main idea of a report or a speech about familiar topics in work related to the profession; being able to use foreign language to express and handle some common professional situations; being able to write reports with simple content , present opinions related to professional workông nghệ

2.2.5.  Computer skills and technology

- Using common softwares such as (WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT, SPSS…) proficiently and specialized softwares such as Photoshop, Audobe Audition, Audobe Premiers, Cool Edit...

2.2.6.  Managing and leading skills

            - Knowing how to organise and assign work in group/ unit.

            - Having the ability to participate in assessing work of individuals and groups;

            - Knowing how to communicate with main partners.

3.  Moral traits

- Preserving and promoting the image of the journalist/ activist in the field of communication.

4. Possible working positions for learners after graduation:

               The BA in Journalism will have the ability to work as reporters and editors at the newspaper and magazine publishers, news agencies, radio stations, television stations, as researchers or teachers at educational institutions and scientific research in journalism and mass communication, as functional staff in the leadership bodies, manage media information or perform work requiring systematic understanding, basic reasoning and professional press skills, as experts in the media company, as communication or public relations (PR) employees. The bachelor of journalism will also be capable of adapting to different environments to perform the work of officials in the agencies and units related to journalism and mass communication such as cultural and ideologic institutions, social  advocating communication organizations, summarizing information department of agencies and units, political - social organizations, companies, consortium, corporation, business economics, trade, services, non-governmental organizations inside and outside the country.

5. Ability to study and improve after graduation

               BA in Journalism can participate in learning and training programs of Master degree specialized in Journalism, Public Relations and closed as well as appropriate subjects in the specialized training systems permitted by Ministry of Education and Training. In some special cases, they can advance immediately to the Doctor degree if they meet the requirements of the regulation.
