2. Goals of training
- General goals:
Creating bachelors of Arts in Literature who are specialized in literary research and able to work both in the field of literary theories and criticism as well as cultural-related fields.
+ Training students who after graduating from this advanced program have a good background in literary theories and criticisim, culture, language, and a deep learning of Vietnamese literature and some other great literature in the world. At the same time, bachelors of this advanced program are trained to have ability of obsorbing knew and creative knowledge in the literary field.
+ Training students who after graduating from this advanced program have good skills of research and criticism in the field of literature; methods of teaching literature in schools; skills of journalism practices as well as creative writing to be able to work in various field of jobmarket.
+ Training students who after graduating from this advanced program have ability of working in literary research and such literary-related fields as teaching literature in schools, doing journalism, publication, media, cultural-related fields, so forth and so on. Bachelors of Arts graduating from this advanced program have ability of researching, preserving, and developing traditional national heritage; introducing world literatures into Vietnam and vice versa; participating in such various activities of the contemporary literary life as literary review, criticism and creative writing.
3. Admission
PART II: OUTCOME STANDARDS OF THE PROGRAM
1.1. Learnings
- Bachelors of this Advanced program in Literature have a background in literary theory, basic learning of culture and language, deep learning of Vietnamese literature and other primary world literatures, and especially ability of absorbing original and new issues in the field of literary research and other related fields.
- Bachelors of this Advanced program in Literature have a deep theoretical learning in the major; have skills and practical experiences to deal with complex questions related to cultural and literary issues; accumulate basic learnings related to primary principles of social sciences and humanities to prepare for higher level of education such as Master and Ph.D programs; have skills of management, law and environment protection related to the major. Besides, they have following specialized learnings and skills:
1.1.1. General learnings:
- Grasping basic contents of Marxism-Leninism, thoughts of Ho Chi Minh, and revolutionary principles of Communist party of Vietnam; having main skills of basic informatic practices, national defense education and physical exercise education; especially improving skills of foreign languages to use in studying and research.
- Grasping basic contents of some of social sciences and humanities related to the majors of the group of general learnings; towards the ability of applying skills and knowledge of interdisciplinary approach and literary research.
- Being able to use basic skills of foreign languages of level 4 in the 6 level frame of using foreign languages authorized in Vietnam.
1.1.2. Learnings of general majors
- Having learnings of such general majors as “Basic Vietnamese Culture,” “Methods of Research,” “Environment and Development,” “General Logic,” “History of Civilizations,” “General Government and Law,” and “General Sociology.” Besides, there are some optional supplemental majors such as “General Economics,” “General Psychology,” “Statistics for Social Sciences,” and “Practices of Vietnamese”; grasping knowledge of majors of “Basic Vietnamese Culture,” “History of Civilizations,” “Sociology,” “Psychology” to cultivate the background for improving the quality of studying research-directed majors.
- Having ability of applying those learnings to dealing with particular issuses of the specialty.
1.1.3. Learnings of basic majors
- Having basic learnings of “General Sino-Nom,” “Introduction to Linguistics,” “General Arts Studies,” and General History of Vietnam.”
- In addition to those requisite learnings, there are some optional courses to help students to improve knowledge of “General Vietnamese literature,” “General Vietnamese,” Vietnamese Stylistics,” “General Anthropology,” “General Aesthetics,” and “General Journalism”; grasping knowledge related to language and arts.
1.1.4. Learnings of majors
- Having basic knowledge about “Principles of Literary Theories,” “Vietnamese Folklore,” and “Theories and Criticism of Arts”; Having ability of applying this knowledge to studying the majors. This knowledge is requisite to the students of the majors. Especially they are required to grasp advanced knowledge about literary theories.
- In addition to the requisite knowledge above, the students could choose to register for some courses to improve knowledge of Sino-Nom, Sociology of arts, practices of journalism and creative writing, Vietnamese Grammar, and Regional Literatures.
1.1.5. Learnings of specialized majors: Including:
- Learnings of history of Vietnamese literature: Vietnamese literature from the 10th century to the mid-18th century; Vietnamese literature from the late 18th century to the 19th century; Vietnamese literature from 1900 to 1945; Eastern-Western cultural exchange and the change of literary paradigm in Vietnamese literature of the era of modernization. Besides, there are some optional courses to supplement speicialized learnings of Confucianism and national literature, some key authors such as Nguyen Trai, Nguyen Du, as well as the progress of modern Vietnamese poetry and short stories.
- Learnings of Russian literature and Western literature: students are required to systematically grasp issues of Russian and Western literature as well as some major schools of literary theories and criticism in the West. Besides, there are some optional supplemental courses such as “20th century Western novels,” “French poem”… Espeically, these optional supplemental courses help students to have a comparative perspective when studying Vietnamese literature to be able to observe the process of cultural and literary exchange and reception.
- Knowledge about Oriental literature: students are required to systematically grasp issues of some primary literatures in Asia such as Chinese literature, Northeastern and Southeastern literature. Besides, there are some optional supplemental courses about the reception of Tang poem in Vietnam and poetical narratives in South East Asia. Espeically, these optional supplemental courses help students to have a comparative perspective when studying Vietnamese literature to be able to observe the process of cultural and literary exchange and reception.
- Knowledge about literary theories: students are required to systematically grasp issues of literary theories including literary genres and literary texts. Besides, students are required to grasp knowledge about methods of creative writing, methods of literary research and teaching; connecting knowledge about literary theories with others about Vietnamese literature and world literature as well as contemporary life of literature.
- Knowledge about arts studies: the students are required to systematically grasp drama and film script-related issues as well as theoretical and practical issues of adaptation, and connect this knowledge with knowledge about literature to have an interdisciplinary perspective in research.
- Initially approaching updated issues of the major.
1.2. Ability of self-control and responsibility
Students who graduate from the department have ability of leadership in the academic field they have been trained; have ability of thinking originally and critically in their work; have ability of self-control and adaptibility to various situation of work; self-learning and self-accumulation of knowledge to improve their own knowledge and skills; have ability of observing and drawing conclusion of academic issues; have ability of organizing and moderating when working; have ability of evaluating and improving academic activities in general.
2. Skills
2.1. Specialty skills
2.1.1. Job-related skills
- Having skills to complete complicated job which requires the knowledge obtained from the academic program; having skills of analyzing and synthizing materials and information and then drawing conclusion; having ability of leadership in the academic field to deal with the issues in particular situations.
- Having ability of research and critique in the literary field, updating issues of contemprorary life of literary research, theories and criticism; especially having ability of undertaking medium research projects in literary field.
- Based on the knowledge and skills obtained from the training, students are able to grasp more difficult issues related to methodology of literary research, criticism and teaching; enhancing the artistic and literary sense, building up basic and necessary skills a literary a literary researcher needs to have and will use in various situations of jobmarket.
- Undertaking jobs of literary research and such literature-related fields as teaching in schools, management of culture-related activities; having ability of research and preservation of national cultural heritage; having ability of introducing primary world literatures into Vietnam and Vietnamese literature to the world; participating in the contemporary life of literature with such activities as literary criticism and publication.
2.1.2. Ability of critical thinking
- Having skills of synthesizing information about literary events from which to generalize the literary life with various events and offer anticipation of the possibility of literary movements in the life.
- Forming ideas, collecting materials, analyzing information, developing and completing a small-scale literary research project.
2.1.3. Ability of researching and creating knowledge.
- Having ability of using knowledge about literature and methods of literary research to carry out a small-scale literary research project or participate in bigger literary research projects, then publishing the results in such different ways as presentation, journal paper, and monograph.
- Mastering skills of writing critique of arts, especially that of literature and film; having ability of writing film script and TV show script; having ability of dealing with literary texts such as editing, writing critique of literature and arts.
- Mastering skills of writing academic essays of literary research.
2.1.4. Thinking systematically
- Having ability of raising ideas and topic for research project; thinking and dealing systematically with literary issues.
- Having ability of analyzing, interpreting and evaluating such a literary phenomenon as a literary text or a group of literary texts based on systematically using knowledge about literature and literary theories and criticism; having ability of initially offering original knowledge about the issue.
2.1.5. Social context
- Having ability of and responsibility for developing the field of literary research; deeply understanding the role and influence of literary research on society and social demands required for literary research in the contemporary context, in the future, domestic context as well as international context.
- Grasping and having ability of offering policies about culture and society.
- Grasping and having ability of building project, undertaking and evaluating projects for development of culture and society.
2.1.6. Context of working organization
- Having ability of synthesizing and anylyzing the outside context and inside context of the working organization, strategies for development of the organization as well as the relationship between the organization and the major.
- Having skills of establishing, managing and developing groups of research.
2.1.7. Ability of applying theoretical knowledge to practice
- Grasping main characteristics of arts and use that knowledge in creative writing and literary research; especially applying theoretical knowledge in practice.
- Being oriented to develop skills of offering, consulting about phenomena of literature and arts as well as developing arts-related media projects.
2.1.8. Ability of original creation, development and leadership in jobmarket
- Having initiative in discovering and creating the newness and original thinking in teaching, research and imaginative writing; especially having initiative in offering systematic renovations related to methods.
- Having interdisciplinary knowledge to be able to work in various fields of literature, arts, and culture.

2.2.4. Skills of communication
- Having skills of building up ideas, arguments, communication in the form of written text; having skills of communication through such media as technologies, personal communication, and presentation.
- Having skills of understanding the addressee and learning how to appropriately communicate with the addressee.
2.2.5. Skills of communication in foreign language
Having ability of reading and understanding main ideas of a literary research paper or a literature-related paper; having ability of using foreign language to express ideas, dealing with some common situation in the field of specialty; having ability of writing a simple report in foreign language, expressing ideas related to the specialty.
2.2.6. Other supplemental skills
- Having ability of reasoning and expressing clearly and coherently issues of specialty.
- Mastering such informatic programs as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint
- Having ability of how to search to find documents and information online; initially applying informatic programs to tasks of storing and processing information related to the specialty.
