Programme of Bachelor in Oriental Studies

Part 1: Introduction to Curriculum of Bachelor in Oriental Studies Programme

  1. Some information on programme

Duration: 4 years

2.  Objectives of the programme

To train students of Oriental studies to have firm political mindset, disciplines, professional ethics, willingness to serve the country and the people. Students have a thorough understanding of social sciences and humanities; fairly comprehensive and systematic knowledge of Oriental studies with different majors like Indian studies, Korean studies, Japanese studies, Chinese studies, etc. Students possess communication skills in international relations, and be able to use language of their majors (English, Korean, Japanese, Chineses, Thai, etc) in communication and professional activities. Graduates of Oriental Studies can work for domestic and international agencies, organisations, enterprises...

3.  Admission criteria

Admission  through the university entrance exame and application review according to regulations of VNU Hanoi and MOET

Estimated quota: 140 students each batch

Part 2: Learning outcomes of higher education curriculum

1. Learningoutcomes of knowledge

1.1. Understanding the interdisciplinary knowledge on matters of politics, economics, society, culture, science and technology:

1.1.1.  Grasp the basic knowledge about the basic principles of Marxism - Leninism, Ho Chi Minh ideology, revolutionary way of Communist Party of Vietnam.

1.1.2. Have basic knowledge of economic, social, and legal state.

1.1.3. Understand the knowledge of natural science in handling the data of the social sciences.

1.2. Background knowledge in the social sciences and humanities:

1.2.1. Grasp the basics of scientific research methodology in the social sciences.

1.2.2. Grasp the basic knowledge of the fields of social sciences and humanities related to Oriental Studies (Area studies, courses on overview of the Orient ...), initially capable of handling knowledge and methods of interdisciplinary approaches and research in the Orient.

1.3. Knowledge of Areaand Oriental Studies

1.3.1 Students understand the core issues in regional studies and have the ability to learn and apply the knowledge in fieldwork in practice.

1.3.2 Understand the basics of culture, civilization, history, language and the process of globalization in the East.

1.3.3 Understand and comparative study Vietnam history and political institutions with other countries in the world, especially the Oriental countries.

1.4. Knowledge of the Oriental Areas

1.4.1 Students need to understand the overview of Northeast Asia, South Asia, South -east Asia and the relations between the countries to be able to recognize the problem occurring in this area.

1.4.2 Students need to understand and analyze the characteristics and problems emerging in the economy of Northeast Asia, South Asia, South East Asia from which to draw lessons for Vietnam.

1.4.3 Students can masterthe similarities of the countries in Northeast Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, such as geographical location, relationships in history, culture, language in general and religion in particular.

1.5 Specific knowledge

1.5.1 The curriculum Oriental studies presently consists of 5 disciplines: Japanese studies, Chinese Studies, Indology, Southeast Asia studies and Korean Studies. Despite these different characteristics, the curriculum provides students with the basic, systematic, modernand most updated knowledge of the countries, in 5 disciplines, including those historical and contemporary, common issues such as geography, history, culture, economics, international relations ... and the problem directly related to Vietnam

1.5.2 The curriculum also helps students master the base knowledge and enhance the language skills (English, Korean, Chinese, Japanese ...) and the research methods in area studies.

2. Learning outcomes of career skills:

2.1. Ability of critical thinking and reasoning to solve the problem:

2.1.1. Capable of detecting and generalizing  practical problems.

2.1.2. Knowing how to search general and specific documents with search engine on the internet and in the library ...

2.1.3. Know how to utilize the tools for research: book-tool, digitized data of Oriental Studies, computer, internet

2.1.4. Having the skills to communicate with the cultures of the Oriental countries.  

2.2. Ability to research and explore knowledge:

2.2.1. Initially having ability to use the research methodologies in regional studies in Oriental studies

2.2.2. Initially having capable of reading and exploiting the resources of specialized foreign language.

2.3. Capacity to apply theoretical knowledge into practice:

2.3.1 Students have skills to apply flexible, fit with the diversed knowledge and skills in the process of learning and apprenticeship.

2.3.2 Sumarizing the lessons – leant for themselves drawn in practice on the basis of comparison with the equipped  knowledge.

2.4. Innovative capacity, develop and lead the change in career:

2.4.1 Able to study and propose recommendations to inculcate understanding, promote friendship and diplomacy between Vietnam and other Asian countries.

2.4.2 Ability to prepare for higher self-training, or participating in advanced training courses (postgraduate), or training courses in the field of research related to Oriental Studies.

3. Outcomes of different complementary skills

3.1. Autonomous Skills:

3.1.1 Adapt quickly to changes in living and working environments. Having integration skills and lifetime learning.

3.1.2  Scheduling works systemacally and scienctifially. Skills to work under time pressure and deadlines of work

3.3. Communication skills

3.3.1 Arrange the ideas, content for communication.

3.3.3 Communication skills with individuals and organizations

3.4. Communication skills using language

3.4.1 Can use language for specific purpose well (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai)

3.4.2 Use of Language: English IELTS 4.0 or equivalent B1 Chinese equivalent HSK Level 3 B1.

3.5. IT and technology skills

3.5.1 Students can use popular software (WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT ...) in text editor.

3.5.2 Can grasp specific software like Photoshop ... to handle the job effectively.

5.  The positions appointed by learners after graduation

Student of Faculty of Oriental Studies can get work in the following fields after graduation:

Working within agencies, state organizations of Vietnam, which includes the following main bodies:

Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Home Affairs, The Government Office, the National Assembly Office, Central for Emulation and Reward, Government Religion Committee, the Congress Office, the General Department of Tourism, the diplomatic missions, foreign representative offices, teaching at universities, working in research institutes (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), the Vietnam Radio, TV station, Press agencies, News ... or working in the provinces (as People's Committee, the Department of Culture, Department of Science - technology, ...), the state-owned enterprises, foreign enterprises in Vietnam.

In addition, students can work in the embassies of foreign countries in Vietnam, international organizations (such as UNDP, UNESCO ...), tourism companies, private enterprises and foreign countries in Vietnam, the international organizations in Vietnam such as Japan Foundation; Korea Foundation, Toshiba Foundation ...

After graduation, students of the Faculty of Oriental Studies can also continue to enhance the professional qualifications and receive scholarships to attend the master's degree, doctorate in countries like China, Japan, South Korea, India, Iran, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, ...
